About Wigan
Wigan is located in the Greater Manchester area of England. Located south-west of Bolton, northeast of St. Helens, Merseyside, and west-northwest of Manchester, the city stands on the River Douglas. Wigan serves as the administrative hub of the Metropolitan Borough of Wigan being its largest settlement. In 2001, the population of the town of Wigan was 81,203, while the population of the larger borough was 305,600.
Wigan, now a city in and the county of Lancashire, was once located in the territory of the Brigantes, an ancient Celtic tribe that governed most of northern England throughout classical antiquity. After the Roman conquest of Britain in the 1st century, the Brigantes were defeated, and it is believed that the Roman settlement of “Coccium” was founded near present-day Wigan. A charter was apparently issued to Wigan in 1246, making it a Borough in the United Kingdom, by Henry III of England. Lancaster, Lancashire, Liverpool, and Preston, Lancashire were the other three municipalities in Lancashire to hold Royal charters at the end of the Middle Ages.
Wigan’s population and economy both exploded during the Industrial Revolution. Once noted for its porcelain and clockmaking businesses, Wigan is today better known as a large mill town and coal mining district. Wigan was the site of the first commercial coal mine in the United Kingdom in 1450; at its height, there were a thousand mine holes right in the middle of town. As one city councilman put it, “a coal mine in the garden was not uncommon in Wigan.” In the latter part of the twentieth century, coal mining was abandoned. When Greater Manchester was formed in 1974, Wigan was included.
