Blackpool, in the county of Lancashire, is a popular English coastal destination. It is the largest city in the Blackpool Borough, which is located on the northwest coast of England. Located on the coast of the Irish Sea between the rivers Ribble and Wyre, the city is about 64 kilometers (40 miles) northwest of Manchester and 27 kilometers (43 miles) north of Liverpool. With an estimated population of 139,720 in its unitary authority and 147,663 in its urban settlement as of the 2011 census, Blackpool was the most populated settlement in Lancashire and the fifth-most populous in North West England, behind Manchester, Liverpool, Bolton, and Warrington.

Until the middle of the 18th century, when it became popular for English citizens to spend their summers at the shore for health reasons, Blackpool was a little fishing village on the coast of Lancashire’s Amounderness Hundred. Blackpool’s sandy beach is 7 miles (11 km) in length, and in 1781, Thomas Clifton and Sir Henry Hoghton constructed a private road so that tourists could more easily access it. In 1782, stagecoaches began operating between Halifax and Blackpool, and in the same year, they began operating between Manchester and Blackpool. New structures built in the early 19th century by Henry Banks and his son-in-law John Cocker helped expand Blackpool’s population from less than 500 in 1801 to more than 2,500 in 1851
