About Carmarthen
Located on the banks of the River Towy, Carmarthen is the county town of Carmarthenshire and a community in Wales. Distance from its estuary in Carmarthen Bay: 8 miles (13 km). The population is expected to rise to 16,285 in 2019 from an estimated 14,185 in 2011. Because it was founded in 1546 when Old Carmarthen and New Carmarthen merged to become a single borough, it often makes the claim of being the oldest town in Wales. William Camden called it the “main citie” of Wales since it was the largest settlement there between the 16th and 18th century. Around the middle of the nineteenth century, as new communities sprang up in the South Wales Coalfield, growth slowed to a crawl.
Carmarthen Town Council was founded in 1974 to replace the previous Carmarthen Borough Council. It is made up of 18 council members who are elected at large from the town’s three electoral districts. Its duties include caring for the town’s five parks and cemetery.
