About Pembroke Dock

Located on the banks of the River Cleddau, three miles (4.8 km) to the northwest of Pembroke, Pembroke Dock (Welsh: Doc Penfro) is a town and hamlet in Pembrokeshire, South West Wales. Pembroke Dock town, once known as the small fishing village of Paterchurch, grew significantly after 1814, when the Royal Navy Shipyard was built nearby. Commuters traveling between Pembroke Dock and Neyland can take the Cleddau Bridge.

More people live in Pembroke Dock than in the city of Pembroke itself, making it the third most populous settlement in Pembrokeshire after Haverfordwest and Milford Haven.

Since it provides protection from the south-westerly winds, the natural harbor (today called the Milford Haven Waterway) has likely been in use for thousands of years. The name of the Carr Rocks at the entrance, taken from the Norse word for rock (skare), is the earliest indication of human habitation seen on maps.

The Vikings frequented the estuary from the year 790 until the Norman invasion in 1066. In either 854 or 878, maybe en route to the Battle of Cynuit, the Viking chieftain Hubba wintered in the harbour with 23 ships.

During the Norman Invasion of Ireland in 1172, King Henry II’s fleet and soldiers embarked from the mouth of the Pembroke River.

It was primarily agricultural and was known as Paterchurch before 1814. The year 1289 marks the earliest known reference to Paterchurch. Like the surrounding fortifications from the 18th and 19th centuries, the tower from the Middle Ages may have operated as a lookout point.
