About Ashton-under-lyne

Located in Tameside, Greater Manchester, England, Ashton-under-Lyne is a bustling market town. According to the most recent official count in 2011, there were 45,198 people living there. Located 6.2 miles (10.0 km) east of Manchester, it is historically in Lancashire on the north bank of the River Tame in the foothills of the Pennines.

Ashton-under-Lyne has been inhabited since prehistoric times, with artifacts from the Bronze Age and Vikings also having been unearthed there. Ashton’s “Ashton” element of the name comes from Old English, where it means “settlement by ash trees,” and hence likely originates in the Anglo-Saxon era. Less certain is the history of the “under-Lyne” suffix, which may have been added because of Ashton’s proximity to the Pennines or the Brittonic word lemo, which means elm. The de Asshetons were the lords of the manor in Medieval Ashton-under-Lyne, when it was a parish and township and Ashton Old Hall was in their possession. The manor included several small towns and villages as well as marshland and moorland, and it was given a Royal Charter in 1414.

Ashton was “bare, damp, and almost useless” before the cotton trade arrived in 1769.

Ashton evolved as a significant mill town at the intersection of newly constructed canals and railways in the mid-19th century due to the factory system and textile manufacturing during the Industrial Revolution. In 1847, the town of Ashton-under-Lyne was officially recognized as a borough thanks to the city’s thriving cotton spinning, weaving, and coal mining industries, all of which were made possible by the town’s convenient transportation links.
