Treorchy, sometimes known as Treorci is a town and community in Wales. The community still has the feel of a mining settlement. Location: in the Rhondda Fawr valley, which is part of the county borough of Rhondda Cynon Taf. The Rhondda also includes Treorchy, which is one of its 16 communities. Ynyswen and Cwmparc are also part of this area.
Treorchy was part of the Marquess of Bute Estate, which owned most of the land in Glamorgan before industrialization.
The landscape was significantly altered by the discovery of coal. In the decades following 1851, Treorchy developed into an important manufacturing center. While the town prospered as a result of the coal mining business in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, by the end of the 20th century, all of the local pits had closed, leading to a decline in the local economy.
After the Bute Merthyr Colliery’s manager, Mr. Huxham, built a level at the Abergorki Colliery in Cwm Orci to the north in 1859, Treorchy became a thriving community. In 1862, it was purchased by Cymmer resident J. H. Insole. In the 1860s, David Davies of Llandinam, who would eventually become the owner of the Ocean Coal Company, sank the first deep mine at Treorchy. The town grew in a straight line along the valley’s primary thoroughfare at first, but by 1875, a grid pattern of streets had begun to take shape.
