About Pentre

Located in the Rhondda valley, not far from Treorchy, lies the small community and electoral ward of Pentre. This area is part of the Rhondda Cynon Taf county borough in Wales. Pentre is named for a huge farm that was prominent in the area prior to industrialization, although the name comes from the Welsh word Pentref, which means homestead. Ton Pentre, its neighbor, is also considered part of the community.

Until 1850, what is now Pentre was a collection of scattered farms owned by absentee landowners and farmed by tenant farmers. In the early 19th century, when coal seams were found to be economically feasible in Dinas Rhondda, expeditions quickly spread to the mid valleys. With the mineral rights to Tyr-y-Pentre leased from Griffith Llewellyn of Baglan in 1857, Edward Curteis of Llandaff quickly had both the Pentre and Church levels opened. The Pentre Coal Company began boring deeper mines in the early 1864. Many of the Pentre mines were among the most lucrative in the Rhondda.

With the construction of the local council buildings on Llewellyn Street in 1882, Pentre became the hub of local government and a bustling commercial center for the upper Rhondda by the turn of the 20th century. St. Peter’s Church (1890), known as the “Cathedral of the Rhondda,” is located in Pentre and is the greatest religious structure in both valleys.

The Pentre Brewery and the Rhondda Engine Works, two of the Rhondda’s most illustrious industries, both got their starts in Pentre.

The community of Ton Pentre, with which the town shares a border, is home to Ton Pentre Football Club, who compete in the Welsh Football League First Division (the second tier) at the present and were previously members of the League of Wales (1993–1996). Since then, they have won six First Division titles in the Welsh Football League, but they have been unable to return to the League of Wales due to financial troubles and inadequate facilities at Ynys Park.
