About Deeside

Deeside refers to a cluster of industrial towns and villages in Flintshire and Cheshire, England, on the Welsh side of the Wales-England boundary, near the canalized section of the River Dee that flows from nearby Chester into the Dee Estuary. In this category include the towns of Connah’s Quay, Shotton, Queensferry, Aston, Garden City, Sealand, Broughton, Bretton, Hawarden, Ewloe, Mancot, Pentre, Saltney[f], and Sandycroft. In this town of over 50,000 people, the majority (17,500) call Connah’s Quay home.

The industrial sector in Deeside is important to the economies of neighboring Cheshire, Merseyside, and North Wales. Deeside Industrial Park, located on the north bank of the Dee at the southern edge of the Wirral peninsula, is the largest employment area in Deeside. The park has historical and contemporary significance, and it provides Deeside and the surrounding area with jobs in a wide variety of industries, from construction to food production. Tata Steel, a major steel producer, and a Toyota engine factory, one of the most technologically advanced in the world, are both located in Deeside.

The Queen Elizabeth II fixed cable-stayed bridge opened in 1998 is the most recognizable structure in Deeside. Locals may refer to it as the “New Bridge,” but it is officially known as the Flintshire Bridge. Every year since 2013, the Wales Rally GB has made the industrial park its home base and service facility.

The Moel-y-Parc and Winter Hill transmitters both serve the Deeside region. While the North West services do not typically cover news events on the Welsh side of the border, they are nonetheless available to residents of this region thanks to BBC Wales, BBC North West, ITV Wales, and ITV Granada.
