About Mold

Mold, or Yr Wyddgrug in Welsh, is a town and settlement in Flintshire, Wales, on the Alyn River. It was the county town of Clwyd from 1974 to 1996, and now it serves the same purpose for Flintshire County Council. There were 10,058 people living there as of the 2011 UK census. The population is predicted to reach 10,123 in 2019.

Yr Wyddgrug, which originally meant “The Mound of the Tomb/Sepulchre,” was mentioned as Gythe Gruc in a document dated 1280–1881.

The Norman-French mont-hault is the original source for the English word “mold” (“high hill”). The Anglo-Norman lord Robert de Montalt is credited with giving the area around Mold Castle its present-day name. In a document from 1254, the name appears as Mohald.

Passenger service at the Mold train station ended in 1962. Buckley is presently the closest station, and it offers service to both Wrexham and Bidston. The Flint train station, from which buses frequently depart for Mold, is not far away and provides access to Cardiff, London, and Manchester. From the bus station, daytime buses travel to many locations including Chester, Wrexham, Denbigh, Holywell, and Ruthin.

The town of Mold and the neighboring areas are served by two different high schools. The Alun School is the biggest in the county, with around 1,800 students enrolled. Ysgol Maes Garmon, the only secondary school in Flintshire taught in Welsh, is located right next door.
