About Bangor

City and community of Bangor, Gwynedd, North Wales. It’s the country’s oldest settlement. According to the 2019 estimates from the Office for National Statistics, the population of this area, which was historically a part of Caernarfonshire, was 18,322. The Cathedral of Saint Mary, Bangor University, and Garth Pier are among notable structures in the city. The city and the island of Anglesey are linked by the Britannia and Menai Suspension Bridges.

Bangor was established in the early sixth century AD when the Celtic saint Deiniol established a monastery on the current location of Bangor Cathedral. Bangor comes from the old Welsh word for a wattled enclosure, which is what once surrounded the cathedral. The current cathedral is a relatively new construction that has undergone significant renovations over the ages. The bishopric of Bangor is one of the oldest in the UK, despite the fact that the actual edifice is neither the oldest nor the largest.

Iago, king of Gwynedd at the time (973), had his throne seized by Hywel and appealed to Edgar, king of England, for assistance. Edgar led an army to Bangor, where he urged Iago and Hywel to share the kingdom’s rule. In spite of this, Edgar asserted sweeping authority by confirming the Bishop of Bangor’s endowments and freedoms, including land and gifts.
