About Sheerness

Located in north Kent, England, Sheerness is a port town and civil parish at the mouth of the River Medway. The town of Minster, located on the same island, has 21,319 residents, making it the island’s largest.

A fort was first constructed in Sheerness in the 16th century to guard the mouth of the River Medway against potential naval attack. Sheerness Shipyard, intended to be a location where warships could be stocked and maintained, was first planned by the Navy Board in 1665. Former Navy Acts Clerk Samuel Pepys thought the location was superior than Chatham’s interior for ship construction. The earlier structure was improved following the 1667 Medway invasion, and in 1669 the town became home to a Royal Navy dockyard, where ships were provisioned and maintained until its demise in 1960.

Sheerness became more of a coastal resort starting in the 19th century when a pier and promenade were built there. The Port of Sheerness remains one of the United Kingdom’s top imports of both automobiles and perishable goods. One of the first co-operative societies in the UK was founded in this town, as well as the first multi-story structures with a strong metal frame.
