About Faversham
Near the Swale, which separates the Kentish mainland from the Isle of Sheppey in the Thames Estuary, is the English market town of Faversham. It is 48 miles (77 km) from London and 10 miles (16 km) from Canterbury. It’s not far from the A2, also known as Watling Street, an old British roadway that the Romans and the Anglo-Saxons utilized. The name comes from the Old English for “the village of metalworkers.”
Faversham was inhabited long before the Romans arrived, and the town’s ancient port on Faversham Creek has served the area as a major transportation hub ever since. The Saxons called it Favreshant, and it was recorded in that year’s Domesday Book. King Stephen granted the town its favor by establishing Faversham Abbey, which remained until the Dissolution of the Monasteries in 1538. The town flourished as a port and a brewing hub after that; the Shepherd Neame Brewery, which opened in 1698, is still a key employer today.
From the 17th and the early 20th century, the town was the center of the explosives business; however, when an accident in 1916 claimed the lives of more than a hundred workers, the industry began to decline. This occurred at the same time as the city’s shipping sector began to flourish again. St. Mary of Charity Church, Faversham Parish Church, Maison Dieu, and Faversham Recreation Ground are just a few of Faversham’s many historic churches.
