Shipley

There are two major routes that meet in Shipley, one going from Otley to Bradford and the other from Skipton to Leeds, hence the town is strategically placed at a ford in the River Aire. The millstone crags of Wrose and Windhill to the east provide shelter, while the moors of Baildon and Hawksworth to the north do the same for this area. [Shipley’s original commercial district sprang up around the intersection now known as Fox Corner, named after the Fox and Hounds pub that used to be on the corner. This ford of the Aire was an important junction on the routes from Otley to Bradford and Skipton to Leeds, and it remains so to this day. Kirkgate and Manor Lane (back then called Sower Lane) were likely nothing more than tracks at the time.

The medieval town of Shipley included the crossroads settlement as well as the open fields of Shipley Fields and the Hirst, which were cultivated jointly. High Moor was a barren wasteland beyond these, while the Low Moor stretched from the Crowghyll to the current-day Saltaire roundabout (a junction on the Bradford to Keighley route) in the vicinity of modern-day Wycliffe (from Saltaire roundabout, through Moorhead, as far as New Brighton and Noon Nick). The terrain in these regions was too rocky and steep for farming. By the year 1600 at the latest, the open fields had been enclosed, and individual farms had replaced them. The River Aire to the north, Bradford Beck to the east, and Cottingley and Heaton to the west and south made up the town’s natural limits.
