Liverpool

Liverpool, in northwest England, is both a major metropolis and a metropolitan borough. In 2015, it was estimated that 478,580 people called the city council area home, while over 2.2 million called the Liverpool/Birkenhead metropolitan area home. To put it simply, Liverpool is the most important city in the Liverpool City Area.

The city of Liverpool is located on the eastern side of the Mersey Estuary, in the south-western part of the county of Lancashire. Historically, it was part of the ancient hundred of West Derby. The year 1207 marks its incorporation as a borough, while 1880 marks its elevation to city status. Growth as a major port and involvement in the Atlantic slave trade contributed to the city’s expansion during the Industrial Revolution. Numerous additional ocean liners, including the RMS Lusitania, Queen Mary, and Olympic, as well as the Cunard flagship, the RMS Titanic, had Liverpool as their port of registry.

In 2007, it marked its 800th year of existence; in 2008, it shared the title of European Capital of Culture with Stavanger, Norway. In 2004, UNESCO designated a number of neighborhoods in the heart of Liverpool as World Heritage Sites. Places like Pier Head and Albert Dock, as well as William Brown Street, are all part of what is known as Liverpool’s Maritime Mercantile City. The city relies heavily on tourism. Liverpool’s prominence as a tourist destination is in large part due to the impact of The Beatles and other bands from the Merseybeat era and beyond. Merseyside derby matches between Liverpool and Everton, two Premier League football clubs, are also played in Liverpool. In the suburb of Aintree, the annual Grand National horse race is held.

Liverpool’s population has always reflected the city’s importance as a port, drawing individuals from many different backgrounds and cultures, especially those from Ireland and Wales. Black Americans and Chinese Europeans both have deep roots in the city. People from Liverpool are known as Liverpudlians (or, less usually, Liverpolitans) and, in a more colloquial sense, as “Scousers,” after the local stew specialty. The Scouse term has also come to be identified with the local accent and dialect of Liverpool.
