The city of Sheffield in South Yorkshire, UK, gets its name from the Sheaf River. The city is the nerve center for the local government of Sheffield. Some of the southern suburbs were moved from Derbyshire to the city council, and the area has long been considered part of the West Riding of Yorkshire. You can consider this city to be South Yorkshire’s largest.

In the basins of the Don River and its four tributaries—the Loxley, the Porter Brook, the Rivelin, and the Sheaf—you’ll find this city in eastern England. Green space accounts for 61% of Sheffield’s total area, while the Peak District national park encompasses around a third of the city. Over 4.5 million trees are expected to be located in the city’s more than 250 parks, forests, and gardens. Distances from other major cities include 32 miles (51 km) to Manchester and 33 miles (53 km) to Nottingham from this location.

The 2021 census found that 556,500 people called Sheffield home, making it the region’s second-most populous city after Leeds. The total population of the Sheffield Built-up Area, of which the Sheffield subdivision makes up the major part, was 685,369 in 2011. This figure does not include the population of the town of Rotherham. The city administers a district borough that, as of the mid-2019 estimate, was home to 556,521. This made it England’s fourth-most populous district. It is one of the Core Cities Group’s eleven British members. There were 490,070 people living outside of parishes in 2011.
