About Ripley

Ripley is a town in the Derbyshire, England, borough of Amber Valley.

Although its exact date of establishment is unknown, Ripley was already recorded in the Domesday Book by its owner, a man named Levenot, by 1086.

A small cluster of stone cottages and farms clustered around a village green and a few scattered houses made up medieval Ripley. The Abbot of Darley had a mill where corn was ground. Located in Ripley, “two water-mills with fish ponds” were mentioned in 1291.

Until the passing of the Coal Nationalisation Act in 1947, the collieries in Ripley were held by the Butterley Corporation. Pits at Upper and Lower Hartshay, Whiteley, Waingroves, Bailey Brook, Exhibition, Loscoe, New Langley, and Denby Hall were among many that operated between 1863 and 1970.

Where are we at this point The Ripley Town Hall, located on the northern side of the Market Square, first opened in 1880. George Eyre, of Codnor, was the architect. It was built on the location of the original, much earlier White House. When it was opened, the Market Hall was on the first floor. The Urban District Council transformed it into a Town Hall in 1907. For its new administrative offices in the 1990s, the Amber Valley Borough Council significantly enlarged and remodeled the building to the west. As part of a reorganization plan introduced in 2012, the Council suggested dismantling and selling off a number of the structures.

The 2006 name study in Britain found that the highest concentration of people of English ancestry lived in the town of Ripley.88.5% of Ripley’s residents are of English ancestry, according to the 2010 census.
