About Belper
Around 7 miles (11 km) north of Derby on the River Derwent, the town and civil parish of Belper may be found in the Derbyshire, England, county of Amber Valley. The hamlets of Bargate, Blackbrook, and Makeney, as well as the village of Milford, are all part of the parish of Belper. The population of the parish in 2011 was 21,823. Since the Middle Ages, Belper has been a major hub for the production of nails. But, with the advent of the Industrial Revolution and the construction of numerous textile mills, the town grew into one of the earliest mill towns, and is now included in the Derwent Valley Mills World Heritage Site.
During the Norman conquest, Henry de Ferrers’ family owned much of the area around Duffield, including Belper. The manor of Bradley, mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086, is often assumed to have been located in what is today called the Coppice neighborhood of the city. It was most likely in the Forest of East Derbyshire, which at the time included all of Derbyshire to the east of the Derwent. After being deforested in 1225, it formed a portion of Duffield Frith and was perhaps taken by William de Ferrers, 4th Lord of Derby.
The name of the town is likely a misspelling of Beaurepaire, which was the name given to a hunting lodge and first appears in a charter from 1231.
