About Belfast

On the eastern coast of Ireland, on the banks of the River Lagan, is the capital and largest city of Northern Ireland, known as Belfast, meaning’mouth of the sand-bank ford’. It is Ireland’s second-largest city and the twelfth-largest in the United Kingdom, according to the 2011 Census. In 2021, there were 345,418 people living there.

Belfast had developed as an important port by the early 19th century. The city was so successful at producing linen that it was given the moniker “Linenopolis” during its time as Ireland’s largest industrial center during the Industrial Revolution. Prior to being recognized as a city in 1888, it had already been an important hub for the manufacture of tobacco products, linen, and rope in Ireland. Another important industry was shipbuilding; the RMS Titanic was constructed in the largest shipyard in the world, Harland & Wolff. Because of industrialization and the resulting influx of immigrants, Belfast is now one of Ireland’s major urban centers. Because of the Irish partition in 1921, Belfast is now the administrative center of Northern Ireland. During partition, the city saw widespread communal violence.
