About Havant
Havantis a town in the south-eastern corner of Hampshire, England, between Portsmouth and Chichester. The borough’s population of 125,000 includes the town of Langstone (population: 45,826) and its surrounding areas, which include the resort of Hayling Island, Rowland’s Castle, Waterlooville, and Langstone Harbour. After the Blitz and the incendiary bombing of Portsmouth, the region’s population and housing stock both increased by more than 100% in the twenty years after the war.
The town’s historic core was a small Celtic settlement before the Roman era, and the post-war influx of commerce, retirees, and commuters caused the town to become economically inseparable from the Portsmouth conurbation.
A Return to the Family Home. Located in the heart of town, the elevated green space on the right is actually part of St. Faith’s Church grounds.
In the 19th and 20th centuries, archaeologists dug up neolithic and mesolithic artifacts, as well as remnants of Roman buildings near St. Faith’s Church and in Langstone Avenue.
Havant, originally called “Hamafunta” (the spring of Hama) circa 935 CE, derives its name from a spring located to the south-west of St. Faith’s Churchyard. The area was settled at the junction of two routes, one from the Downs to the coast and the other running east-west along the coast.
When the Domesday Book was compiled in 1086, Havant was a small farming community with a population of about 100. Haveunte Market was first authorized for the monks of Winchester Cathedral in the year 1200.
