About Hove
Hove – or “Hove Actually,” as it’s known locally – is synonymous with Brighton as well as possessing its own distinct and equally striking identity.
Somewhere along Western Road, the main shopping street that runs from Churchill Square to Palmeira Square, Brighton gradually merges into Hove – perhaps where the large commercial shops begin to merge with the independent shops. From the less commercial end of Western Road, along Church Road to its intersection with Sackville Road, you will be firmly in Hove, Brighton’s slightly more genteel, but no less exciting, counterpart.
Along the beachfront, Hove is comprised of regal squares, crescents, and verdant community gardens, with buttercream-colored structures that dazzle when the sky is blue. Back from the water, you can stroll along grand avenues, admiring white-washed villas and imposing apartment buildings that are still only a hop, skip, and a jump from the beach. From the end of Western Road to the end of Church Road, there are a multitude of independent shops, ranging from fashion boutiques to book stores, delicatessens to chocolateries, and refill stores. There are restaurants for every budget, including cheap and cheerful cafés, chic bistros, and award-winning restaurants that require advance reservations. Whatever satisfies your appetite, whether it’s a gourmet full English, vegan pizza, or top-notch fine dining, you don’t need to travel to Brighton because Hove already has it.
At the end of Church Road, you’ll find George Street, a pedestrianized street with a variety of cafés, pubs, shops, and charity shops that leads to Blatchington Road, where you’ll find more specialty shops selling vintage clothing, pre-owned toys, and used furniture.
On the pub front, whether you’re looking for a pint accompanied by live music, a cozy local watering hole for a quiet drink, or traditional pub fare, Hove has no shortage of great places to get a drink. Alternatively, if you want to sample a variety of gins or sip an Instagrammable cocktail, you can find it in Hove (actually).
