About Waterlooville

Six miles (9.7 km) north-northeast of Portsmouth, Waterlooville is a market town in the Borough of Havant in Hampshire, England. The borough’s largest municipality.

Over 64,350 people live in the area, and it is bounded by the communities of Purbrook, Blendworth, Cowplain, Lovedean, Clanfield, Catherington, Crookhorn, Denmead, Hambledon, Horndean, and Widley. It is a suburban area that connects to the rest of South Hampshire. Old Route A3 connecting London and Portsmouth became the center of the growing town.

The town’s name is said to come from the bar that once stood in the area (then called Wait Lane End) and used as a staging area for horses waiting to switch teams before the ascent of Portsdown Hill. After returning from the Battle of Waterloo, many of the soldiers who had just disembarked in Portsmouth in 1815 decided to stop at the pub, which had been given the moniker Heroes of Waterloo in honor of them.  Many of them supposedly settled there, according to urban mythology. They were honored by having the bar renamed in their honor, and the neighborhood around the bar eventually became known as Waterloo. Being an unparished region, Waterlooville does not have a parish council or town council. The Borough of Havant is the first level of administration in the area, and its council members represent Waterloo, Hart Plain, Cowplain, and Stakes wards, respectively. Hampshire County Council is the highest tier; Waterlooville and Stakes North, which includes the downtown area, are represented by a single council member; Cowplain and Hart Plain are represented by a different council member; and so on.
