About Sittingbourne

Sittingbourne is an industrial town in Kent, south-east England, located 17 miles (27 km) from Canterbury and 45 miles (72 km) from London, and adjacent to the Roman Watling Street, an ancient British trackway used by the Romans and the Anglo-Saxons, as well as the Swale, a narrow strip of sea separating mainland Kent from the Isle of Sheppey. In the years following Thomas Becket’s death in 1170, the town flourished as travelers passing through on their way to or from Canterbury or Dover found it to be an ideal stop.

Sittingbourne station is on the Chatham Main Line, which connects to London Victoria and HS1 to St. Pancras International and takes around an hour.

The name “Sittingbourne” originates from a modified form of an old remark about the area. The name of the town comes from the presence of a tiny creek, or “bourne,” beneath the streets. Hasted, who chronicled Kent in the 1790s, claims that:

The Saxon name for the village of Sittingbourne was Saedingburga, which literally translates to “the hamlet by the bourne”

Bricks could be made from the local clay, and the geology of North Kent yields a wealth of chalk that is uncommon in the rest of Europe. As a result, related businesses like as shipping on water, making paper, and making cement all flourished and are still going strong in the region.
