About Southwold

Southwold, in the English county of Suffolk, is a coastal town and civil parish on the North Sea. It is located in the Suffolk Coast and Heaths Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, at the mouth of the River Blyth. The town is located within the Suffolk Coastal parliamentary constituency, about 11 miles (18 km) south of Lowestoft, 29 miles (47 km) north-east of Ipswich, and 97 miles (156 km) north-east of London. Including “All Usual Residents,” the population of the town was 1,098 as per the 2011 Census. According to the Southwold and Reydon Society’s 2012 Housing Report, nearly half of the town’s properties are either seasonal rentals or utilized only occasionally.

Although the town lost its independent Municipal Borough status in the Local Government reforms of 1974 and consequent incorporation in Waveney District, it continues to have an elected, non-partisan Town Council and Mayor, based at Southwold Town Hall.

With the 1 April 2019 amalgamation of the Waveney and Suffolk Coastal districts into a new East Suffolk district, Southwold became an expanded ward with Reydon and Walberswick, represented by a single councillor. Previously, the Southwold and Reydon ward, under Waveney District, elected two councillors.
