About West Calder

The village of West Calder is located four miles west of Livingston in the municipal area of West Lothian, Scotland. It has always been a part of Midlothian County. In the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, the town served as a major hub for the oil shale business. There is a train station in West Calder.

Polbeth, Addiewell, Loganlea, Harburn, and Westwood, all of which use the name “West Calder” in their addresses, surround West Calder and have contributed significantly to the development of both West Calder and West Lothian. Within 10 minutes, you can be in Livingston, where you’ll find not one but two major shopping malls, far from the village’s doorstep. The town is located on the ridge high above the Calder burn.

Castle Greg, a Roman fortlet located in nearby Harburn to the south-east of West Calder, is evidence of early human habitation in the area. During the Middle Ages, this region was a part of the huge parish of Calder Comitis, which belonged to the Earls of Fife. By 1643, the huge parish of Calder Comitis had been split into two halves, Mid Calder and West Calder.
