About Livingston
West Lothian is home to an ancient settlement called Livingston Village, which has been inhabited since the 12th century. It was a farming community in West Lothian that was absorbed into modern-day Livingston.
History records show that the area presently known as Livingston Village was originally settled in the 12th century under the name Livingston. Villa Levingi (Leving’s town) was first referenced in a document dated to the early 12th century. In a charter confirmed by Turstani filii Levingi and dated 1128, David I gave the newly established Abbey of Holyrood custody of the church in Livingston and its income (Thurstan Levingsson). He constructed the Peel of Livingston, an abandoned fortification tower. Levingstoun, Layingston, and finally Livingston are all names that were given to the nearby settlement as it expanded. This place was once ruled by the Leving family, whose members all died out by the year 1512. Livingston Peel, a massive Scottish tower house, was the family home. The Murrays of Elibank lived there beginning in 1512 and continuing until 1671. By the end of the 1700s, the Peel had been torn down and replaced by a new home, which the Murrays had named Livingston Place before selling it to the Cunninghams. In 1828, the Earl of Rosebery bought the property, and by 1840, it had been torn down.
The Scottish Premier League club Livingston F.C. calls Almondvale Stadium on the outskirts of town.
