About Broxburn

Broxburn is a town in West Lothian, Scotland .12 miles (19 km) separate it from Edinburgh’s West End, 5 miles (8.0 km) separate it from Edinburgh Airport, and 5 miles (8.0 km) separate it from Livingston. Easter Strathbock, the village’s original name during the medieval era, was replaced by Broxburn around 1600. Due to industrialization associated to shale oil production, the area expanded quickly throughout the Victorian era. While much of the local industry has since declined, the town has expanded as a result of new residential construction, forming a conurbation with Uphall in the process. It is located immediately south of Winchburgh.

The name Broxburn is a perversion of “brock’s burn,” where “brock” refers to either a badger or a huge stream in Scots, depending on whether it comes from the Pictish/Welsh/Brythonic Broch or the Gaelic broc.  Previously, the community was referred to as Easter Strathbrock (Uphall was Wester Strathbrock), with Strath deriving from either the Gaelic word srath or the Pictish/Welsh/Brythonic word ystrad, all of which refer to river valleys.

Broxburn is located in both the British Parliament’s Livingston constituency and the Scottish Parliament’s Almond Valley constituency.

It was a part of Scotland’s European Parliament district until that district was dissolved due to Brexit.

For governmental purposes, it is included in West Lothian Council’s 2nd ward, which also encompasses the neighbouring villages of Uphall and Winchburgh and is known as the Broxburn, Uphall, and Winchburgh Ward.
