Motherwell
Located to the southeast of Glasgow, Motherwell is a town and former burgh in North Lanarkshire, Scotland. Over 32,120 people call this place home. Motherwell is the seat of North Lanarkshire Council and was formerly located in the parish of Dalziel. Motherwell is geographically separated from Hamilton to the west by the River Clyde, from Carfin to the north-east by the South Calder Water, and from New Stevenston and Bellshill to the north by the South Calder Water.
Motherwell and Wishaw are physically joined, forming a significant urban area in North Lanarkshire. The two towns share a demographically and culturally similar population and have close relations within the region.
North Lanarkshire Council, one of the most populated local government areas in Scotland, and the “Q” division of Police Scotland both have their headquarters in Motherwell. They serve a total of 327,000 people in North Lanarkshire’s 183 square miles (470 km2), including 59,000 in Motherwell and Wishaw.
In the 19th and 20th centuries, Motherwell was known as the center of Scotland’s steel industry and was given the moniker “Steelopolis”. The water tower and three cooling towers of the David Colville & Sons’ Ravenscraig steelworks dominated the cityscape until the plant’s closure in 1992. Before it was shut down, Ravenscraig’s steelmaking facilities had one of the world’s longest stretches of continuous casting and hot rolling equipment. The Ravenscraig plant closing meant the end of large-scale steel production in Scotland, while Tata Steel Europe still runs the Dalzell steel plate mill in the city.
