About Dunstable

Located 30 miles (50 kilometers) north of London, Dunstable is a market town and civil parish in Bedfordshire, England, to the east of the Chiltern Hills. If you’re coming into Dunstable from the north, you’ll see a number of steep chalk escarpments. Dunstable, along with Houghton Regis, makes up the westernmost portion of the Luton/Dunstable Urban Area and is the fourth largest town in Bedfordshire.

There was a small Roman outpost there called Durocobrivis before it became modern-day Dunstable.

As the nominative form of the name was assumed to be Durocobrivae, that’s what shows up on the map in 1944. However, the current theory holds that the form Durocobrivis, which appears in the Antonine Itinerary, is a fossilized locative that was used frequently, thus this is the form that Ordnance Survey employs. Its current name is disputed, but various explanations have been put forward.

Dunstable was originally a municipal borough until the 1974 implementation of the Local Government Act 1972. Being part of the Central Bedfordshire district, it has the status of a civil parish. The Grove House offices of the Dunstable Town Council provide municipal services to the surrounding civil parish.
