Bradford

Bradford is the name of a city in the English county of West Yorkshire. The city itself serves as the metropolitan borough’s name, while the county at large is granted devolved authority. With a population of 349,561 in 2011, it was the second most populous municipality in the West Yorkshire Built-up Area, after only Leeds (which is located around 9 miles, or 14 km), to the east. With 546,412 residents, the borough is the seventh most populated local authority area in England.

Located in what was formerly known as West Yorkshire, the city flourished as a global hub for the production of woolen textiles in the nineteenth century. The city became known as the “wool capital of the world” during the height of the Industrial Revolution, and its residents earned the monikers “Woolopolis” and “Wool City” as a result. Coal, iron ore, and soft water were readily available in this area at the eastern foothills of the Pennines, allowing for the establishment of a thriving manufacturing base that, with the advent of the textile industry, triggered a rapid increase in population and encouraged the government to invest in infrastructure. City Hall, built in an Italianate style, is just one example of the many examples of Victorian architecture that have been preserved in the city. It was incorporated as a borough in 1847, granted a city charter in 1897, and since a 1974 reform has had its city limits included in the current borough.

Since the middle of the twentieth century, when deindustrialization began to take its toll on the city’s textile industry and industrial base, Manchester has experienced the same economic and social problems that have plagued the rest of post-industrial Northern England: poverty, unemployment, and civil unrest. It has a third-largest economy in Yorkshire and the Humber, worth about £10 billion, thanks mostly to the banking and manufacturing sectors. They have the National Science and Media Museum, an urban park, the Alhambra Theatre, and Cartwright Hall, making them a prime tourist destination and the first UNESCO City of Cinema. After winning the title on May 31, 2022, the city will serve as the UK City of Culture in 2025.
