About North Shields
The English town of North Shields is located in the Borough of North Tyneside in the county of Tyne and Wear. Located 13 km east of Newcastle upon Tyne, Wallsend is a small town that shares a border with Tynemouth.
For centuries it was part of the Castle ward in Northumberland’s administration, but since 1974 it has been a part of Tyne and Wear’s North Tyneside borough. Prior to the abolition of the borough in 1974, this location was a parish within the Tynemouth County Borough.
Located across the river from South Shields, on the northern side of the Tyne. The word “schele” originates from Medieval English and refers to “fishermen’s temporary sheds or houses.”

Prior Germanus of Tynemouth, whose Priory sits on a headland at the mouth of the River Tyne, founded the town of North Shields in 1225 as a fishing port to provide his monastery with fish. In addition, he provided for ships that had anchored close to the priory. The mouth of the Pow Burn, where the stream flows into the Tyne, is home to a collection of crude dwellings known as “shiels,” as well as wooden quays where fishermen offload their catch. Coal from Priory-owned mines in the area was also transported using the quays.
