Sowerby Bridge

Originally, the town was a crossing point over the once-much-wider River Calder, where it joined the River Ryburn. The town derives its name from the historic bridge that spans the central river. Prior to the Industrial Revolution, the region was separated into the parishes of Sowerby, Norland, Skimcoat, and Warley. Between them are the rivers Calder, Ryburn, and Warley Clough, which has been substantially culverted. Around the bridge, the textiles and engineering industries flourished. The Sowerby Bridge Town Hall, which housed the local board’s offices, was completed in 1857.

Midway through the 19th century, the settlement’s population increased, and in 1894 it became an urban district in the West Riding of Yorkshire. Pollit & Wigzell produced stationary steam engines for the cotton and woolen mills of Yorkshire, Lancashire, and India from 1892 to 1930. The Valley Iron Works of Wood Brothers, an engineering and millwright company, also produced engines. North London’s Markfield Beam Engine is an example of its work.

It was announced in January 2019 that the council buildings on Hollins Mill Lane, including the former offices of Sowerby Bridge Urban District Council, the old swimming pool, and the old fire station, will be transferred to a community group, Sowerby Bridge Fire and Water, and renovated for community use.
