Brighouse

Brighouse is a town in the metropolitan borough of Calderdale in the English county of West Yorkshire. It is located on the River Calder, 4 miles (6.4 km) east of Halifax and historically within the West Riding of Yorkshire. It is served by Junction 25 of the M62 motorway and the Caldervale Line and Huddersfield Line railway station at Brighouse. The Calder and Hebble Navigation has a mooring basin in the central business district. The 2001 United Kingdom Census recorded a population of 32,360 for the Brighouse / Rastrick subdivision of the West Yorkshire Urban Area. According to the 2011 Census, the Brighouse ward of Calderdale Council had a population of 11,195. Brighouse has the postal code HD6.

The origin of the name Brighouse (or “Bridge House”) is a building on or near the bridge over the River Calder. Historically, it was once a hamlet of the nearby village of Rastrick.

Brighouse is twinned with Lüdenscheid, Germany, a relationship that began with an exchange by the Brighouse Children’s Theatre in 1950 and continued with a civic twinning charter in 1960.

Snake Hill Ford, a river crossing on the Calder, is believed to have been part of the Roman route between Wakefield and Manchester. In 1275, a wooden structure known as Rastrick Bridge was documented. In 1514, a new bridge was constructed from timber donated by John Hanson. In 1558, the son of Hanson funded the replacement of this bridge with stone. The river supplied energy to the flour milling and textile industries. John Smeaton, an engineer, began construction of the Calder and Hebble Navigation in 1757, which boosted Brighouse’s economy. In 1893, the town was incorporated.

The Halifax and Huddersfield Turnpike Act of 1823 authorized the construction of Calder Bridge, or Brighouse Bridge, over the river on what was to become the A641 road; the bridge’s tolls were abolished in 1875, and extensive widening work was performed in 1905 and 1999. (both of these latter dates being commemorated in dedication stones on the bridge).
