About Oldbury

The town of Oldbury is located in the Sandwell Metropolitan Borough in the English West Midlands. In addition to being one of the six towns that make up the borough, it also serves as its administrative center.

The population of the Oldbury ward was 13,606 according to the 2011 census while the population of the greater metropolitan area was estimated to be 25,488 in 2017. According to the 2011 census, the population of Oldbury Town was 50,641. The Sandwell Metropolitan Borough Council defines Oldbury Town as including the wards of Bristnall, Langley, Oldbury, and Old Warley.

The fact that the name “Oldbury” is derived from the Old English “Ealdenbyrig” indicates that the town had been around for at least a millennium before the advent of modern English. Byrig is the plural of burh, which means “fortification” or “fortified town” in Old English; Eald means “old” in Old English.
