About Milford Haven
Milford Haven is a town and settlement in Pembrokeshire. It faces the north side of the Milford Haven Canal, an estuary that forms a natural harbour that has served as a port since the Medieval Ages. Sir William Hamilton, who laid up the town’s grid system, founded it in 1790. Its primary purpose was to serve as a whaling hub, but by the year 1800, it had already begun to grow into a Royal Navy dockyard, a role it would play until 1814, when the dockyard was moved to Pembroke. After the 1960s, when an Esso oil refinery was established nearby, the port transformed into a commercial dock specializing in the transportation of fuel oil and liquefied gas. With three oil refineries and one of the largest LNG terminals in the world, the town’s port became the fourth largest in the UK in terms of tonnage by 2010. It continues to play a significant role in the energy industry of the UK.
Located in the center of the county, Milford Haven is home to 13,907 people as of the 2011 census, making it the largest settlement there.
With a population of 13,582, it ranks as the county’s second-most populous urban area, after only Haverfordwest (where the urban area extends beyond its community boundary).
