About Cheltenham
Cheltenham, or Cheltenham Spa (/tltnm/), is a town and borough in the county of Gloucestershire, England, on the outskirts of the Cotswolds. Cheltenham, which claims to be the most complete Regency town in Britain, gained notoriety as a health and holiday spa town resort with the discovery of mineral springs in 1716.
The town is known for its many cultural festivals, such as the Cheltenham Literature Festival, the Cheltenham Jazz Festival, the Cheltenham Science Festival, the Cheltenham Music Festival, the Cheltenham International Film Festival, the Cheltenham Cricket Festival, and the Cheltenham Food & Drink Festival, all of which attract well-known contributors and attendees from all over the world.
In the sport of steeplechase horse racing, the Cheltenham Festival takes place in March, with the Gold Cup as the highlight event.
The town of Cheltenham is governed by the Cheltenham Borough Council, which is made up of 40 council members elected from 20 different wards. Since 2002, half of the council members have been elected at each biennial election.
Cheltenham is home to the GCHQ, or British Government Communications Headquarters, also known as “The Doughnut” by the locals.
