About Wallasey

About 212 miles north-west of London and 5 miles west of Liverpool, Wallasey sits on the northwestern extremity of the Wirral peninsula at the mouth of the River Mersey in the county of Merseyside.

The population of the city is close to 60,800 people. Around 155 square kilometers are governed by the Metropolitan Borough of Wirral.

Liscard, Seacombe, Egremont, New Brighton, Wallasey Village, Poulton, and Leasowe are only some of the townships that merged together after the Queensway Tunnel under the River Mersey from Liverpool opened in 1934. Fort Perchrock and Liscard Battery, both constructed in the early 19th century to safeguard Mersey River shipping, are two such important historic buildings. It serves as a convenient home base from which to explore the region because to its convenient proximity to Liverpool and its convenient access to the city by bus, train, and ferry.

It is known that a church existed in Wallasey as early as the 6th century. The Benedictine monks of Birchen Head Priory were the first to run a ferry across the Mersey in 1330, after receiving a license from King Edward III. Not until the 19th century did the area experience growth and wealth due to the emergence of shipbuilding and other port-related industries. Liscard, Seacombe, Egremont, New Brighton, Wallasey Village, and Poulton are the six original settlements that expanded into modern-day Wallasey after the Queensway Tunnel under the River Mersey was completed in 1934. Around 1830, a ferry began running between New Brighton and Liverpool, and the town quickly grew into a popular resort. Liscard is the primary shopping mall in the area.
