About Peterfield

Petersfield, located in the English county of Hampshire, is both a market town and a civil parish. Just north of Portsmouth by about a quarter of a circle (15 km). The city is serviced by its own station on the Portsmouth Direct line, which is the primary rail connection between Portsmouth and London. Petersfield is fully included within the South Downs National Park and is located below the northern slopes of the South Downs.

The town expanded as a coach stop on the Portsmouth to London route due to its strategic location at the intersection of two major thoroughfares, the A3 (now a bypass) and the A272. Petersfield has a sister city relationship with both Warendorf, Germany, and Barentin, France.

The burial mounds of Petersfield Heath have been estimated to be anywhere from 2,000 to 4,000 years old, and are concentrated in the heath’s eastern and southeastern corners. The significance of these series of lowland barrows has led to their inclusion on lists of the most significant archaeological sites in the country. Barrows found in the Heath area provide evidence that the region was once inhabited by people who came to view it as religiously significant. Petersfield Museum runs a community project to shed additional light on this time period, although no verifiable traces of these people’s residences have been found as of yet because the buildings would have been wooden.
