About Ammanford

Ammanford is a village and town in Carmarthenshire, Wales, with a 2011 population of 5,412. Former coal mining community. The population of the built-up area was 7,945, and the urban area was considerably larger. According to the 2001 census, 75.88% of the inhabitants spoke Welsh, compared to approximately 61% in Carmarthenshire as a whole and 21.8% in Wales overall. Ammanford and Breuillet, Essonne are sister cities.

Ammanford is a relatively contemporary community. It was formerly known as Cross Inn, after an inn that stood at a point where multiple roads intersected. Due to the expansion of the tinplate and anthracite coal industries in the nineteenth century, a village built up around the Cross Inn (which later became known as Ammanford Square).

As the community grew, important locals came to believe that its name should be changed, as there were already several other locations named Cross Inn in Carmarthenshire. Several public meetings were conducted in 1880, and in November 1880, it was decided that the name Ammanford (meaning “ford of the River Amman”) would be selected. The gathering was presided over by Wacyn Wyn. Residents and merchants hailed the June 1883 decision of the Great Western Railway to rename the Cross Inn station to Ammanford. It took several years for the new name to become universally accepted.
