About Alton

There is a market town and civil parish called Alton in the East Hampshire area of Hampshire, England, close to where the River Wey begins its journey through the countryside. The population in 2011 was 17,816.

The name “Alton” was spelled “Aoltone” in the Domesday Survey of 1086. Alton was referred to as Aweltun by the Saxons. In the middle of the English Civil War, the town of Alton was the site of the Battle of Alton. Jane Austen and “Sweet Fanny Adams” are also mentioned in this context.

Found near the town in 1996, the Alton Hoard is a treasure trove of Iron Age coins and jewelry now housed in the British Museum.

In the vicinity of Neatham, near Alton, there is evidence of a Roman road that connected Chichester and Silchester, and maybe a Roman posting station called Vindomis, as well as a ford across the River Wey. During construction, a cemetery dating back to the 7th century and evidence of an Anglo-Saxon village were uncovered. The Alton Buckle, now on exhibit at the Curtis Museum and often regarded as the best example of Anglo-Saxon craftsmanship in Hampshire, was discovered among the grave goods. The buckle, which was unearthed from a warrior’s burial, is made of silver gilded and features a body encrusted with garnets and glass.
