About Halesworth
Located in the county of Suffolk in England’s northeastern corner, Halesworth is a market town, civil parish, and electoral ward. As of the 2011 Census, the population was 4,726. It is located on a tributary of the River Blyth, nine miles (14 km) upstream from Southwold, and 15 miles (24 km) south-west of Lowestoft. Halesworth has a train station that is on the East Suffolk Line between Ipswich and Lowestoft. It has twin cities in Bouchain, France, and Eitorf, Germany. Cratfield, Wissett, Chediston, Walpole, Blyford, Linstead Parva, Wenhaston, Thorington, Spexhall, Bramfield, Huntingfield, Cookley, and Holton are some of the nearby communities.
There was once a bank in Halesworth that printed its own currency. The British Museum’s Coins and Medals Collection contains a 1799 example of a five-guinea banknote (£5.25) issued by the Suffolk and Halesworth Bank, as well as later examples.
East Suffolk district council and Suffolk County Council are responsible for running Halesworth as of 2019. It was a part of the Waveney district from 1974 until 2019. Halesworth Urban District Council served as the city’s governing body prior to 1974.
It wasn’t until 1974 that Halesworth established a town council. Each of the 12 members of the Town Council is elected every four years. The chairman and vice-chair of the council are elected by their peers and typically serve for two years.
