About Eastleigh

Located in the county of Hampshire, Eastleigh is a popular commuter town for those traveling between Southampton and Winchester. With 24,011 residents as per the 2011 census, Eastleigh is both the largest town in and the borough seat for Eastleigh.

It is located on the River Itchen, which is one of the best chalk streams in England for fly fishing and a site of Special Scientific Interest. Once a collection of villages, Eastleigh was founded as a railroad town by the London and South-Western Railway in the 19th century.

Eastleigh, a contemporary city, was founded in AD 79 on the site of an ancient Roman road between Winchester (Venta Belgarum) and Bitterne (Clausentum). A Roman lead coffin unearthed in 1908 in the Eastleigh area is only one of many artifacts that point to the area having been inhabited by Romans.

According to historical records, the Saxon settlement of East Leah has been around since the year 932 A.D.

(‘Leah’ comes from an old English word for a clearing in the woods.) King thelstan gave land at North Stoneham to his military help, Alfred, in 932 A.D., according to a survey from the time period, providing further proof of this settlement. The name is believed to have been given the prefix ‘Est’ or ‘East’ because of its position in relation to the older town of Baddesley.
