About Cheadle

Cheadle is located in Stockport Metropolitan Borough, Greater Manchester. It is located in the county of Cheshire and shares borders with Stockport neighborhoods including Cheadle Hulme, Gatley, Heald Green, and Cheadle Heath, as well as Manchester neighborhoods like East Didsbury. Population in 2011: 14,698.

Throughout ancient times, humans have lived in what is now Cheadle. In the Iron Age, the Celts who had settled in Britain buried their dead in ceremonial mounds, and this is the first indication of civilization. Thereafter, Brigantes moved in and left behind evidence of their presence in the shape of shattered axes.

Roman coins from the first century AD have been found in the area, proving that the Romans occupied the region. St. Chad, a seventh-century preacher, visited the region. In 1873, a stone cross in his honor was discovered near where Micker Brook meets the River Mersey.

Domesday Book first mentions the settlement as “Cedde,” the Brythonic term meaning “wood.”

About three miles in length and half as wide, it had both woodland and open land as well as places enclosed for hunting and was held by Gamel, a free Saxon under Hugh d’Avranches, 1st Earl of Chester

This ancient estate spread across what are now the neighborhoods of Cheadle and Cheadle Hulme.
