About Billericay
The name “Byllyrica” was originally recorded in the year 1291, but it was then altered to “Billerica” in the year 1307, “Billyrecha” in the year 1594, and “Bilrecky” in the year 1686. Pilgrims on their way to Canterbury would frequently stop for the night in one of Billericay’s many taverns (during this time period, highwaymen found “rich pickings” on the “Pilgrim’s Path”) before continuing on to Tilbury, where they would cross the Thames. This allowed Billericay to develop into a staging post during the 13th and 14th centuries.
Billericay is a flourishing market town that is isolated from the cities of Basildon to the south, Brentwood to the west, and Chelmsford to the north by the surrounding countryside and farmland. It is officially estimated to have a population of 36,000, but experts believe the real number is probably closer to 40,000 due to the considerable rise in house development that has occurred in recent years. It is about 15 kilometers (9.3 miles) from the Essex coast and is only 12 kilometers (7.5 miles) from the M25 motorway. It is a bustling residential suburb of London that can be reached by train about half an hour from Liverpool Street. People who don’t work in the city could be employed in the oil industry, engineering, or the information technology sector. A significant research and development facility belonging to Ford Motor Company may be found in Dunton, which is located immediately to the south of the parish.
The area is home to a plethora of organizations and clubs, including not one but two Rotary clubs, Lions, Roundtable, Residents Association, and a variety of sports groups, including football, rugby, cricket, and golf clubs, in addition to many other “hobby and craft” organizations. There are a lot of different groups that are geared toward those who have small children. The town is represented by an independent Town Council, and it shares a Conservative Member of Parliament (the Rt. Hon. John Baron) with the neighboring towns of Basildon and Wickford.
