About Banchory
Banchory is a burgh or town in the Scottish county of Aberdeen. About 29 kilometers (18 miles) west of Aberdeen, close to where the Feugh River flows into the Dee River.
At the eastern edge of town, a farmer uncovered a little cist grave in 2009. It was a burial from the Beaker civilization, and archaeologists were called in to dig it up. The burial was most likely performed between 2330 and 2040 BC, according to radiocarbon dating. Stable isotope research of the skeleton revealed that the person either grew up on basalt geology, like that of the region, or on chalk, suggesting that they were either locals or possibly from another location, like Yorkshire. Butter or milk had been stored in the Beaker pot found in the grave, as evidenced by the residue inside.
St. Ternan is credited with establishing a Christian community there, which may explain the origin of the name. There is a legend that Ternan worshiped St. Ninian. According to local legend, he first planted his town in the spot that would become the medieval parish of Banchory-Ternan, right on the banks of the River Dee.
