About Gloucester

Gloucester is located on the River Severn, 31 kilometers east of Monmouth, and 17 kilometers east of the Welsh border. To the east, you’ll find the Cotswolds, while to the west, you’ll find the Forest of Dean. There are over 132,000 people living in Gloucester and its surrounding environs. The Gloucester and Sharpness Canal connects this city to the Severn Estuary, making it a port.

In 1155, King Henry II issued its first charter. In the Chapter House of Gloucester Cathedral in 1216, the nine-year-old Henry III was crowned with a gilded iron ring. St. Peter’s Abbey (later Gloucester Cathedral) was established in 679; St. Oswald’s Priory (now Gloucester Cathedral) was founded in the 880s or 890s; and Llanthony Secunda Priory (now Gloucester Abbey) was established in 1136, all of which attest to Gloucester’s importance as a religious center during the Middle Ages. In 1643, during the First English Civil War, Royalist soldiers besieged Gloucester, and the city held out for a while.
