Nantwich
Nantwich, located in the county of Cheshire in England, is both a market town and a civil parish under the jurisdiction of Cheshire East. It is home to some of the Abest-preserved examples of Tudor and Georgian architecture in the country. Its population in 2021 was 14,045.
Located on the Cheshire Plain along the banks of the River Weaver is the town of Nantwich. To the west of the city, on an embankment, the Shropshire Union Canal crosses the A534 on an iron viaduct. Visitors to the city often drop anchor in the basin. To the north, it connects at Hurleston to the Llangollen Canal. It’s around 20 miles south of Chester and 4 miles south-west of Crewe. All important routes in and out of town converge at this intersection: the A51, A500, A529, 530, and 534. From Nantwich to the border with Wales, the section of A534 is often considered to be one of England’s ten most dangerous highways.
Both the 6-inch and the 1:2500 Ordnance Survey maps of Cheshire used the tower of St. Mary’s Church as their meridian.
Nantwich is second only to Chester in the number of historic structures it boasts. Barker Street, Beam Street, Churchyard Side, High Street, and Hospital Street form a concentration in the town center, while Welsh Row stretches over the Weaver. The majority lies within the town’s 38-hectare (94 acre) conservation area, whose borders roughly correspond to those of the town as it existed in the late medieval and early post-medieval periods.
