About Beverley

Beverley, the county town of the East Riding of Yorkshire in England, is a market and minster town with a civil parish. The town’s core may be found 27 miles (43 km) south of York’s and 15 miles (24 km) north-west of Hull City. Beverley Cathedral, Beverley Westwood, North Bar (15th-century gate), and Beverley Racecourse are all well-known attractions in the city. Massachusetts’ Beverly was named after the town because of its beauty. That, in turn, inspired the development of Beverly Hills, California. The town was featured in the Sunday Times’ 2018 study on northern England’s best places to live.

Saint John of Beverley, under the reign of the Anglian kingdom of Northumbria, founded the settlement (then called Inderawuda) in 700 AD. When the Cerdic dynasty took over after the Vikings, it became the most important religious center in all of Britain. Under the Normans, who founded its trading business, the city flourished and expanded further. A center of religious activity for the duration of the Middle Ages thanks to its founder, it subsequently rose to prominence as a major wool trading center. Because of its wool and the pilgrims who came to honor its founder, John of Beverley, Beverley was once the tenth largest town in England and one of the wealthiest. There was a significant decline in Beverley’s importance after the Reformation.

Beverley served as the seat of the Borough of Beverley’s government throughout the 20th century (1974–1996). Located 12 miles (19 km) west of Hornsea, 10 miles (16 km) east of Market Weighton, and 8 miles (13 km) north-west of Hull, it is currently the county town of the East Riding. With a total population of 29,110 in the metropolitan area, Beverley had 17,549 people call the historic parish home as of the 2001 United Kingdom census. During the 2011 census in the United Kingdom, the parish’s population was recorded as 18,624.
