About Littleborough

Greater Manchester, England’s Littleborough is located 3 miles (4.8 km) northeast of Rochdale and 12.6 miles (20.3 km) northeast of Manchester in the upper Roch Valley at the foothills of the South Pennines, with Milnrow and the M62 motorway to the south and the rural uplands of Blackstone Edge to the east. Along with the surrounding communities of Calderbrook, Shore, and Smithy Bridge, Littleborough had a total population of 13,807 in the year 2001.

There is proof of prehistoric, Roman, Celtic, and Anglo-Saxon habitation in and around Littleborough, Lancashire.

Littleborough was a hamlet in the Hundersfield manor, Rochdale parish, and Salford hundred during the Middle Ages.

It centered on the point where two historic Pennine routes converged to ford the River Roch, one of which may have been a Roman road. In 1472, Littleborough had a chapel, a few cottages, and an inn, and its residents were mostly farmers who were encouraged to start weaving wool by merchants traveling between the Rochdale and Halifax markets. The introduction of cotton as a textile foundation resulted in a population boom in Littleborough, with many new residents coming from the neighboring West Riding of Yorkshire. In the outskirts of Littleborough, wealthy people settled in mansions and estates.

Summit Gap, between Littleborough and Walsden, was chosen as the finest route through the Pennines for the Rochdale Canal and the Manchester to Leeds railway in the late 18th century, and Hollingworth Lake was constructed on Littleborough’s south side as a feeder reservoir to regulate the canal’s waters.
