About Heywood

The civil parish and settlement of Heywood are located in Wiltshire, in the southwest of England. The village can be found about 1.5 miles (2.4 km) north of Westbury and 3.5 miles (5.6 km) south of the county town of Trowbridge.

Located between the A350 national route and the B3461 road that connects Yarnbrook and the Westbury industrial region, Heywood is home to a small community of around 200 people. Over the tracks to the west of the village is the tiny settlement of Dursley. South of the parish, near Westbury, is the West Wilts Trade Estate and a section of The Ham.

The parish is bounded on the west and the north-west by Biss Brook.

Heywood was a part of Westbury’s parish and hundred during the vast majority of its existence. The manor of Heywood was owned by Stanley Abbey beginning in the 13th century. In 1537, it was owned by Sir Edward Bayntun; subsequent affluent families included the Longs and the Marlboroughs.

In the parish, between Heywood and Dursley, the Wilts, Somerset, and Weymouth Railway was constructed in 1848, connecting the Swindon-Bath line (near Chippenham) with Westbury via Trowbridge. The door here is still open. In 1896, the northern part of the parish of Westbury was separated to form the new civil parish of Heywood; in 1909, a portion of Heywood was returned to Westbury.

Heywood was a component of the Warminster and Westbury Rural District from 1935 until 1974, when it merged with the new West Wiltshire district following its dissolution under the Local Government Act of 1972. Since 2009, when West Wiltshire was abolished as a district, the new Wiltshire Council unitary authority has handled all major local government tasks.
