About Hitchin

With a population of 35,842, Hitchin is a market town and unparished region in the North Hertfordshire district of Hertfordshire, England.

It was in the 7th century that the Tribal Hidage first mentions Hitchin as the tribal capital of the Hicce people, who owned 300 hides of land. The name Hicce (sometimes spelled Hicca) may refer to equestrians. The origin of the Middle Anglian sounding name can be traced back to the Old English language. Theodore of Tarsus, Archbishop of Canterbury, reportedly picked Hitchin as the site of ‘Clofeshoh’ in 673, at the first meeting of representatives of the nascent Christian churches of Anglo-Saxon England at the Synod of Hertford.

Hitchin was listed as a Royal Manor in the Domesday Book, which was compiled in 1086. The manor demanded the unusual feudal duties of inward from its sokemen, which were more common in the eastern counties such as Cambridgeshire and Hertfordshire. There is evidence to suggest that a temporary earthen bank and ditch defense was built around the city sometime around the turn of the tenth century, but this did not last.
